Roof Cleaning Salem Oregon: Moss Removal and Treatment

Moss on the north slope ends up in the gutters. Treating the roof is half of keeping them clear.

Moss on a north-facing roof is not a cosmetic problem. It lifts the bottom edge of the shingle, holds water against the surface, and sheds into the gutters all winter. Roof cleaning in Salem is as much about protecting the roof and keeping gutters clear as it is about how the house looks from the street.

Salem Gutter Works treats and removes roof moss across Salem and the mid-Willamette Valley. Call (503) 713-6224.

Why the valley grows so much of it

Wet, mild winters and long overcast stretches are close to ideal conditions for moss. North-facing slopes and anything shaded by firs stay damp for months. Composition shingle holds moisture in its granular surface, which is why it grows moss faster than metal.

Moss does real damage in two ways. It creeps under the lower edge of each shingle and lifts it, which breaks the water shedding path the roof depends on. And it holds moisture against the shingle continuously, which shortens the life of the mat underneath.

Gutters are the second casualty. Moss sloughs off through the winter and lands in the trough, where it holds water like a sponge and does not wash through. A house with a mossy roof is a house whose gutters clog faster, which is why we treat the two together.

How roof moss is removed properly

No pressure washing. This matters more than anything else on this page. A pressure washer strips the protective granules off composition shingle and takes years off the roof. It looks impressive on the day and costs you a roof replacement early. Anyone quoting a pressure wash on a shingle roof should be sent away.

Treatment first. A moss killing solution is applied and left to work. Moss dies and dries over following weeks rather than coming off immediately.

Gentle removal. Dead moss is brushed or lifted off by hand, working down the slope so nothing gets driven under the shingle edges.

Soft washing where appropriate. Low pressure application for algae streaking and general grime, which cleans without stripping granules.

Gutters cleared after. Everything that came off the roof is in the gutters now. Clearing them is part of the job, not an extra.

Prevention. Zinc or copper strip along the ridge releases trace metal in rain that inhibits regrowth downslope. It does not remove existing moss, so it goes on after a cleaning rather than instead of one.

These are typical Salem-area ranges, not a quote. How much moss is actually up there is the biggest variable, and it is hard to judge from the ground. A roof that looks lightly green from the driveway can turn out to have two inches of growth along the north slope. What moves the price: roof size, pitch, how heavy the growth is, roof material, access for ladders, and whether the roof is sound enough to walk.

What to expect on the day

Treatment visits are short, often under an hour. Removal visits run two to four hours depending on how much is up there.

If we are treating rather than removing, the moss does not disappear that day. It browns off over two to six weeks and then either sheds in the rain or gets removed on a follow up visit. Anyone promising a clean roof the same day on heavy growth is either pressure washing it or overselling.

Keep pets inside while treatment is applied, and move patio furniture out from under the eaves. Plants below the drip line get rinsed.

An old roof may not be safe to walk on, and if that is the case we will work from ladders and edges and tell you what cannot be reached rather than risk putting a foot through it.

Questions people ask

Will you pressure wash my roof?

No, not on composition shingle. Pressure washing strips the granules that protect the shingle and shortens the life of the roof significantly. We treat and remove gently instead, and if someone has quoted you a pressure wash, that is a good reason to get another quote.

How long until the moss is gone?

Two to six weeks after treatment for the moss to die and dry out, then it sheds in the rain or gets removed on a follow up. Heavy growth usually needs the second visit.

How often does it need doing?

Most Salem roofs need attention every two to four years. A heavily shaded north slope under firs can need it more often. Zinc strip along the ridge lengthens the interval but does not remove the need entirely.

Does moss removal help my gutters?

Yes, directly. Moss sheds off the roof into the gutters through the winter, and it holds water rather than washing through. Treating the roof is one of the more effective things you can do to slow how fast gutters fill. See gutter cleaning.
