Gutters reach the end of their life quietly. They rust at the seams, the hangers loosen, the pitch drifts, and one winter the whole run comes away from the fascia. Gutter installation in Salem is worth doing properly, because a run that is sized and pitched correctly will outlast the roof above it.
Salem Gutter Works installs seamless aluminum gutters across Salem and the surrounding towns. Call (503) 713-6224 for a free measure and estimate.
When replacement beats another repair
- Rust or holes in several places along the same run
- Sections bent badly enough that the profile no longer carries water
- Hangers that have pulled out more than once in the same spot
- Gutters too small for the roof, which shows as overflow in every heavy rain no matter how clean they are
- A remodel, a new roof, or fascia work that means the gutters are coming off anyway
- More than about a third of the total run needing repair
A new roof is the natural moment. Gutters come off for the roofing job regardless, and putting old ones back on a new roof is usually false economy.
Why seamless, and what the alternative is
Sectional gutters come in lengths and join every ten feet or so. Every joint is a seam, and every seam is where a leak eventually starts.
Seamless gutters are rolled on site from a coil, so a sixty foot run is one continuous piece of aluminum. The only joints are at the corners and the outlets, which cuts the number of potential leaks on a typical house from dozens to a handful.
Sizing matters more than most people expect. Five inch K-style is the default, and on a lot of Salem houses it is undersized. A steep roof, a large roof area draining to one run, or a valley dumping into a single spot all call for six inch gutter and three by four inch downspouts rather than the standard two by three. Undersized gutters overflow in heavy rain no matter how clean they are, and the first hard November downpour is when the owner finds out.
How the installation is done
Measure and plan. Total footage, downspout positions, where water needs to go once it leaves the building, and whether the fascia is sound enough to hold hangers.
Old gutters off. Removed and hauled away. This is the point where hidden fascia rot shows up, and if it does, it gets fixed before new gutter goes on, not after.
Roll on site. The coil goes through the machine and comes off as a continuous length cut to the run.
Hang to pitch. Hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia, spaced closer than code minimum on runs that carry heavy debris. Fall set at roughly a quarter inch per ten feet toward the outlet.
Corners, outlets, downspouts. Corners sealed, outlets cut and fitted, downspouts strapped to the wall and fastened at every elbow rather than friction fitted.
Water test. Water runs the whole system before we leave, so you see it work rather than take our word for it.
What gutter installation costs in Salem
| Job | Typical range in Salem |
|---|---|
| Seamless aluminum, per foot installed | $9 to $18 |
| Typical single story house, 150 to 200 feet | $1,400 to $3,200 |
| Typical two story house | $1,900 to $4,000 |
| Steel, per foot | $12 to $25 |
| Copper, per foot | $30 to $55 |
| Removing and disposing of old gutters | $1 to $3 per foot |
| Downspouts, each | $75 to $200 |
| Upgrade to six inch gutter and larger downspouts | add roughly 15 to 25 percent |
These are typical Salem-area ranges, not a quote. Footage is only part of it. The number of corners, the number of downspouts, the height, and whether any fascia needs repairing first all move the total, and two houses with identical footage can be a thousand dollars apart. What moves the price: total footage, gutter size, material, number of corners and outlets, stories, old gutter removal, and fascia condition.
What to expect on the day
Most single story houses are a one day job, larger or two story houses one to two days. Someone should be reachable by phone in case the fascia turns out to need attention, because that is a decision you will want to make rather than have made for you.
Move cars away from the house and unlock gates. The gutter machine sits on a trailer in the driveway and needs room to feed a long length of aluminum out straight.
It is a noisy job in stretches, mostly the screw gun. Old gutter, offcuts and packaging all leave with us.
Questions people ask
How long do seamless aluminum gutters last?
Twenty years and up in this climate when they are hung on sound fascia and kept clear. The failure is rarely the aluminum itself. It is hangers pulling, sealant at the corners giving up, or standing water sitting in a run that lost its pitch.
Do I need six inch gutters?
Not usually, but sometimes. If your current gutters overflow in heavy rain even right after a cleaning, that is the sign. Steep roofs and large single-drainage areas are the usual culprits. We will measure the roof area before recommending it rather than upselling by default.
Can you install gutters in winter?
Yes. Hanging gutter is not weather dependent the way sealing is, though we schedule the sealed corner work around dry windows. Winter is often the quickest time to get booked.
What color options are there?
Standard aluminum coil comes in a range of baked finishes, with white and brown the most common around Salem. Ask for the current color card when you book, since stock ranges change.
