A gutter that leaks at a seam or sags in the middle usually does not need replacing. Gutter repair in Salem is often a matter of new hangers, resealed joints and correcting the pitch, and that costs a fraction of a new run.
Salem Gutter Works repairs gutters across Salem and the mid-Willamette Valley. Call (503) 713-6224 and tell us what it is doing.
What can be repaired, and what cannot
Usually repairable: leaking seams and end caps, a run that has pulled away from the fascia, pitch that has drifted so water stands in the trough, loose or missing hangers, a separated downspout elbow, a single dented or damaged section, holes from rust or a ladder.
Usually not worth repairing: gutters that have rusted through in several places along the same run, sections so bent that the profile no longer holds water, or any run where the fascia board behind it has rotted. Rotted fascia is the one to watch, because a new gutter screwed into soft wood will pull off again within a season. That needs a carpenter first, and we will tell you so.
If more than about a third of the total run needs work, replacement usually costs less than repeated repairs. We will do the arithmetic with you rather than quote whichever one pays better.
Common repairs, and what is actually wrong
Leaking seams. Old sealant hardens and cracks. The fix is stripping the failed sealant back to clean metal and resealing, not smearing new sealant over old, which is why a lot of resealing jobs fail again the next winter.
Sagging between hangers. Usually spikes that have worked loose from expansion and contraction, or hangers spaced too far apart to carry a full gutter. Modern hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia hold far better than old spike and ferrule.
Water standing in the trough. The run has lost its pitch. A gutter needs roughly a quarter inch of fall for every ten feet toward the outlet. Too flat and it holds water, too steep and it overshoots in heavy rain.
Overflow at one corner only. Usually not a gutter problem at all, but a valley on the roof dumping more water into one spot than that outlet can take. The answer is a bigger outlet, a diverter or a second downspout.
Downspout coming apart. Elbows separate where they were only friction fitted. They should be fastened and sealed.

These are typical Salem-area ranges, not a quote. A repair on a single story with clear access and the same repair twenty feet up over a deck are priced very differently. Call (503) 713-6224, or send a photo to salemgutterworks@gmail.com, for a written price, free and with no obligation.
What moves the price: height, access, how much of the run is involved, whether the fascia behind it is sound, and whether the gutter is a standard profile that parts are still made for.
What to expect on the day
Most repairs are a half day or less. You do not need to be home unless we need access inside, which is rare.
If the repair involves sealant, it needs dry weather to cure, so repairs get scheduled around the forecast between November and March. We would rather move a booking than seal a joint in the rain and have you call back in January.
Old sealant, offcuts and packaging leave with us.
Questions people ask
Is it cheaper to repair or replace?
Repair, until roughly a third of the run needs attention. Past that, repeated repairs cost more over a few years than one replacement, and the new run comes with fresh hangers and correct pitch throughout. See gutter installation.
How long does a repair last?
A properly stripped and resealed seam should hold for years. Sealant applied over old sealant often fails in one wet season, which is why the first fifteen minutes of the job is scraping rather than sealing.
My gutters only overflow in heavy rain. Is that a clog?
Not necessarily. If they drain fine in ordinary rain and overflow in a downpour, the more likely cause is too few downspouts or a roof valley concentrating water at one point. Clearing them will not fix that, and we will say so instead of selling you a cleaning.
Can you match my existing gutters?
Usually. Standard five inch and six inch K-style aluminum is still widely available in common colors. Older or unusual profiles are harder, and occasionally the honest answer is replacing the full run so it matches itself.
